Homes that Move - Day 1 - Week 1 (Mark Day School)

Day 1 of Summer Tinkering is our opportunity to welcome kids into a world most of us wish we could inhabit more. It’s a practical world, with a fantastic bent, one where ideas (no matter how wild) are encouraged, then explored for their connections to the real world-can we build that with wood and screws? Can we make it better? How do we start?

Tinkerers don’t refer to the adults as Teachers. Instead they call them collaborators. We use first names and we all meet each other on the same level, as curious people. We sit in a circle and share what we learned and give appreciations at least twice a day. It is awesome.

Our goals for the week are as follows:

  • Collaborate and make friends

  • Make mistakes & learn from them

  • Try harder than usual

  • Build something bigger than ourselves

Having fun isn’t a goal, it is a product of these things.

We have rules to keep us safe that we came up with together.

And one last thing: after much practice, we all know how to use the clamps, drills and the chop saw safely. We can make just about anything.

On Friday, at 2pm you can come see what we create!
